From concerts to stargazing, July keeps Phoenix outdoors

Remember when Lollapalooza started in Phoenix in July?: ‘It’s so hot’

As the hottest month of the year, July isn’t generally known for its outdoor events in Phoenix, at least outside of July 4th fireworks shows. But the month still offers plenty of things to do, and in fact has hosted memorable July concerts in years past.

Arguably the most notable outdoor July concert in Valley history arrived on July 18, 1991, when Compton Terrace, in Chandler, hosted the very first stop of the inaugural Lollapalooza touring festival. Launched by founder Perry Farrell to blend artists from a wide range of genres, Lollapalooza kicked off in Chandler that July with a lineup featuring Jane’s Addiction, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ice-T & Body Count, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Rollins Band, and more, and MTV News was here to cover it.

“It’s 109 degrees, and the excitement is running high here at the opening date of Lollapalooza, a traveling carnival of music, information, and art,” Dave Kendall from MTV reported from the Compton Terrace grass.
