Free speech battle brewing in Surprise

Massie arrest makes national news, leads to lawsuit of city

Thirty-seven seconds was all the time Surprise community activist Rebekah Massie had left to speak to the Surprise City Council from the podium.

But that short amount of time could lead to months of litigation for the city now that Massie was removed and arrested during the Aug. 20 council meeting.

Massie’s high-profile arrest has created a firestorm online with hundreds of thousands of viewers watching the incident on YouTube. It’s also grabbed the attention of national figures such as Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake and media personality Glenn Beck, who have sent tweets about it and forwarded the video of the arrest on X to their massive followings.
