Fountain Hills students leave their mark on public art

At Fountain Park, where visitors gather for sweeping views of the fountain and surrounding desert, a new mural is doing more than adding color. Adjacent to the town’s iconic fountain, it tells a story not just of place, but of participation.

Created by 13 students ages 12 to 16 from The Inspiration Academy, the recently installed mural celebrates the Sonoran Desert landscape while marking a new chapter in how Fountain Hills approaches public art. For the town, the project represents an investment in youth, creativity and community identity.

The mural, designed and painted under the guidance of local artist Laura Thurbon, brings together desert imagery and one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks, the fountain itself. The result reflects a postcard-style vision rooted in place and shaped by the next generation.
