Foster a dog, cat for the holidays through Maricopa County animal control

Day, overnight, medical foster options available

The Maricopa County Animal Care and Control Department is encouraging residents to give shelter dogs and cats a break for the holidays.

The foster program was developed to provide temporary and safe out-of-shelter opportunities for safe and appropriate, foster-eligible dogs and cats. Day, overnight and medical foster opportunities support the department’s lifesaving mission.

Whether it’s caring for animals recovering from medical procedures, helping underage or underweight animals until they are appropriate for adoption, or giving much-needed temporary relief to shelter animals that need a break from the shelter’s fast-paced environment, foster volunteers provide compassionate care for animals in need.

Current Needs

The most critical year-round need is for larger dogs (over 30 pounds). Seasonal needs include bottle baby puppies and kittens as well as nursing mothers who need out-of-shelter space to comfortably raise their young until they are appropriate for adoption. Foster opportunities for other animals are currently limited to medical recovery.

Easy Application

To become a foster volunteer, review available opportunities for one that will best fit your schedule and abilities. The Foster Handbook has even more information about the program and foster volunteer requirements.

Residents able to meet the department’s foster program requirements and needs should:

  • Complete the online application so staffers can learn about you, your home, and your availability.
  • Once submitted, you'll receive an automated email.
  • Then you’ll be contacted with next steps to get you scheduled for a brief orientation. While the department does accept some walk-in foster opportunities at its west shelter at 2500 S. 27th Ave., in Phoenix, due to high volume of requests the department highly encourages scheduled appointments to best meet your needs.
