Former Metrocenter Mall to be torn down starting next month

Portions of a longtime Phoenix retail landmark is expected to be razed next month.

Demolition on Metrocenter Mall is expected to be done in piecemeal stages since asbestos abatement needs to be done on individual buildings before each structure gets destroyed, according to Steve Betts, senior development director at Concord Wilshire.

Crews are expected to do the abatement as they go. The first part of the demolition process is set to take place in early September. That process is expected to take about 10 months.
