Highway officials arrested a former Las Vegas police officer in December for his alleged role in a traffic collision in Surprise, including making a false explosive report to highway officials.

At about 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19, Arizona Department of Public Safety state troopers responded to a three-vehicle collision near US 60/Grand Avenue and Bell Road in Surprise.

Joseph Landrum, 41, was arrested for suspicion of extreme DUI, hoax, endangerment, criminal damage, false reporting of an emergency and false reporting to police, according to DPS. Landrum told officers about explosives in his truck, but DPS ordinance experts found no explosives in the vehicle.

Landrum is a former Las Vegas Police Department officer of about 14 years. He left in May of 2016, according to a spokesperson.

Those involved in the incident sustained minor injuries.

The Surprise Police Department assisted DPS with traffic enforcement, with Grand Avenue closed for about three hours before reopening at about 10:15 p.m.

Officials booked Landrum into a Maricopa County jail.

He was released on a secured appearance bond of $2,700.

With a secured appearance bond, Landrum promises that he will appear in court for future proceedings related to his crimes.

The Maricopa County Superior Court website lists an initial pretrial conference for Feb. 17.
