Former Deer Valley Unified student trying to help US hockey win gold

A former Deer Valley Unified School District student will try and help Team USA bring home some hockey gold next month.

When the Winter Olympics begin Friday, Feb. 4 in Beijing, suiting up for the men’s hockey team will be 19-year-old left wing Matthew Knies. Knies went to Sandra Day O’Connor High School, 25250 N. 35th Ave., Phoenix, within DVUSD as a freshman and sophomore, from 2017-19. He transferred to Ray High School in Kearny for his last two years, from 2019-21.

The left-hander was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in Round 2, as the 57th overall pick, in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He skates collegiately for the University of Minnesota.
