Byrd signed with the Cards after the 2018 season after having had two injured reserve stints in his three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, the first for a leg injury and the second for a broken arm.

The Panthers signed Byrd as an unrestricted free agent and, after a year on the practice squad in 2015, he worked his way to the pros in 2016.

Byrd joins a Patriots team recreating its identity after the departure of six-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady, who joined former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
