A new exhibition showcasing rare and historic flutes is coming to Musical Instrument Museum.
“The Magical Flute: Beauty, Enchantment, and Power” will display more than 100 historic flutes, presented alongside traditional clothing and ceremonial regalia that reflect their cultural significance.
The exhibition opens Friday, Nov. 7 at the Museum located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., in Phoenix.

“The Magical Flute: Beauty, Enchantment, and Power” will display more than 100 historic flutes, presented alongside traditional clothing and ceremonial regalia that reflect their cultural significance.
The exhibition opens Friday, Nov. 7 at the Museum located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., in Phoenix.
The opening weekend will feature a lineup of pan flute crafts, curator talks, and performances spanning everything from opera arias to Irish rock.

Craft: Pan Flute
Design and decorate your very own pan flute craft with colorful details, embellishments, and personal touches to make it unique.
9:30-10 a.m.
Curator Talk: Global Fife and Drum
Join curator of education Mike Silvers to learn about the spread of fife-and-drum music in many parts of the world, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Brazil, Jamaica, and Mississippi.
11-11:30 a.m.
Flute Family Demonstration: Desert Echoes Flute Project
See members of the acclaimed flute choir Desert Echoes Flute Project, Arizona’s premier flute ensemble organization, as they demonstrate the sounds of an array of flutes, from the tiny piccolo to the gigantic double contrabass flute.
Experience the captivating sounds and melodies of the Desert Echoes Flute Project in a performance that features works written for the ensemble, including a Southwest premiere.

Curator Talk: Collecting Historical Flutes
Join curator for Europe Matthew Zeller and historical flute collector Mark Leone for a conversation about collecting, maintaining, and playing some of the world’s finest and rarest flutes.

Join Jarrett May of the Phoenix Symphony for a program that explores the flute’s expressive power across centuries and continents, featuring works by Bach, Debussy, Telemann, and Ferroud.
