Central Arizona Flute Ensemble will bring its seven-member flute choir to Peoria for a performance.

Starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, the concert will take place on the main stage at Theater Works, located at the Peoria Center for Performing Arts, 10580 N. 83rd Drive, in Old Town Peoria.

The event is sponsored by a grant from the Peoria Arts and Culture Department.

Playing instruments that range from the traditional piccolo to the rare 10-foot-long contrabass flute, the flute choir will perform a wide range of musical styles including oldies, classical, pop, patriotic, and show tunes. Listeners will learn about the flute family, composers, and styles.

“We mindfully disregard the classical concert tradition of keeping the audience at a distance,” CAFE Manager Leslie Etzel shared in a press release. “Instead, we actively engage with our listeners. For example, rather than a printed program, we take turns standing up to introduce our music with interesting tidbits and a bit of humor. People see our faces, hear our voices, and connect with us during the Q&A session.

“During this particular concert, we will pass two flutes around the audience so listeners can hold the instrument and manipulate the keys.”

Since forming in 2014, CAFE has performed at 95 venues in metro Phoenix, including the Desert Botanical Garden, art galleries, senior communities, libraries, Tempe History Museum, Mesa Art Center, and Arizona Broadway Theatre. This will be their first appearance at Theater Works.

The Central Arizona Flute Ensemble is a 501(c)(3) that presents interactive concerts and educational programs that showcase the diverse instruments in the flute family.
