Flu season peaking late as COVID-19 rises in Phoenix

Valley doctors encourage vaccine despite slight miss

This influenza season may be milder compared with the last, but it’s still just getting started.

According to data from the Arizona Department of Health Services, the state has reported 2,852 laboratory- confirmed cases so far for the 2021-22 season. Approximately 1,469 cases originated in Maricopa County.

That marks a 380% increase over the 2020-21 influenza season, which saw just 594 cases total at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been only seven influenza-caused deaths this year.
