Flu cases higher this year in Sun Cities area

Diagnoses up across state compared to 2020

Flu season is here and Banner Health physicians are encouraging individuals to get the vaccine this year amid higher cases.

According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, the latest figures show flu cases are up 250% from 2020. Devin Minior, Banner Urgent Care physician executive, said in 2019 the flu hit hard, but last year was a unique situation that saw lower concerns because of coronavirus closures and precautions that helped prevent the spread of the flu.

The general population was doing well following all COVID precautions and those helped with the transmission of the flu. Additionally, there was a record high flu vaccination number, with the flu almost non-existent and incredibly mild during the December 2019 and January 2020 time frame, Minior said.
