A $7 million grant will pay for a portion of a flood-control facility to be constructed to hold back water from Weekes Wash northwest of Lost Dutchman Boulevard and Goldfield Road in Apache Junction that may also have multiuse trails and other recreation uses.
“The project is expected to remove many properties downstream from the FEMA 100-year floodplain for Weekes Wash, potentially saving residents flood-insurance costs, and damage and reconstruction costs,” City Engineer Emile Schmid said recently. “‘Many properties’ in this case is estimated to be over 4,200 parcels — a very significant number.”
The 10-square-mile Weekes Wash watershed collects rainwater from storms and sends it down Weekes Wash into the city, Schmid said at an Aug. 16 City Council work session.
