Fishing for all comes to Phoenix’s Papago Park

Posted

A new dock opened this week in Papago Park, allowing everyone – regardless of ability – to fish and enjoy the outdoors.

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department opened the covered fishing dock, which meets the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, on Thursday, Sept. 29. The dock is at 625 N. Galvin Parkway, next to the main entrance of the Phoenix Zoo.

Phoenix Councilman Sal DiCiccio and the Parks and Recreation Department worked with The Mission Continues, a 9/11 veteran's group, to help build the dock, according to a release.

“Fishing is a great pastime that any person, of any ability, should have access to," DiCiccio said. “I am proud to have worked with our city and other partners to expand accessibility in meaningful ways for our residents, and I encourage you to come check out the new dock.”

Cynthia Aguilar, parks and recreation director, said the “dock will help ensure people of all abilities can enjoy all that Papago Park has to offer.

“It is a small step toward our goal to provide all residents with access to recreation amenities."

For ease of accessibility, the dock is on the largest pond next to the main parking area, which includes ADA parking spaces.
