First public hearing held on Tempe’s amended anti-discrimination ordinance

Final hearing scheduled for Nov. 30

Tempe is moving forward in amending its city code to expand its anti-discrimination ordinance to make it illegal for people with the authority to rent, sell or lease housing to discriminate based on an applicant or buyer’s source of income.

Tempe City Council held the first public hearing on this proposed change at its Oct. 26 meeting, where no council members or members of the public spoke on the amended ordinance.

Currently, Tempe’s city code protects on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, familial status, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation and U.S. military veteran status, according to a city report by City Council Aide Annie Mazzarella.
