First procedure for new stroke device done in Phoenix

Left atrial appendage closure device reduces risk of stroke, bleeding

The first implant procedure for a new stroke device was performed by Dr. Ashish Sadhu at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital Oct. 3.

Sadhu, of the Cardiovascular Institute of Scottsdale, along with the Abrazo Heart medical team were the first in Arizona and one of the first in the country to perform the procedure.

The third-generation Watchman FLX left atrial appendage closure device is designed to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation who need an alternative to oral anticoagulation therapy. It permanently closes off the left atrial appendage – the area of the heart where stroke-causing blood clots commonly form in these qualified patients.
