Fireworks show coming to Glendale Westgate for July 4th

Law prohibits many fireworks outside of organized events

A Fourth of July celebration is coming to Westgate in Glendale.

The 11th annual Firework Fest goes from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, in the entertainment district at 6770 N. Sunrise Blvd.

The event will feature free face painting, balloon twisting, classically restored fire trucks with a kid-approved splash zone, an open-air beer garden with live music, games and more.

First responder agencies recommend attending this organized event rather than celebrating with fireworks at home.

Arizona state law allows only ground-mounted or hand-held fireworks that don’t fly up in the air; i.e., spinners, wheels, fountain smoke devices, etc. These types of fireworks are allowed only through Thursday, July 6, and later in the year from Dec. 24 through Jan. 3.

Fireworks that make a loud “bang” or fly in the air are always illegal. These include firecrackers, cherry bombs, M-80s, bottle rockets, roman candles, and aerial shells.

State law fines for violating fireworks laws begin at $1,000. City law fines for violating fireworks laws begin at $1,500.

Glendale does not allow the use of any fireworks between 12:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. on any day.

Illegal use of fireworks may be reported to the Glendale Police Department non-emergency line at 623-930-3000.

Also, the Glendale Police Department uses the ShotSpotter solution to help gather gunfire intelligence and data.

Celebratory gunfire is a common problem in many cities, particularly over the Fourth of July weekend. It often, Glendale police said, has tragic results when innocent people are hit by stray bullets and are injured or killed. The reality is that any bullet discharged from a gun, even into the sky, must land somewhere, and when it does, the risk of injury or death is significant.

ShotSpotter provides real-time gunshot location data, enabling informed decisions for faster and more accurate emergency response.

During the holiday Glendale officers will respond to all ShotSpotter activations throughout the city, and particularly in hotspot areas, and will arrest anyone caught discharging a firearm in public.
