Fireworks increasingly causing fires in Phoenix

Fire Department hopes safety education campaign will lead to safer Fourth of July

Fires caused by fireworks in Phoenix have skyrocketed since the state legalized firework use on certain dates in 2010, Phoenix fire officials said.

In 2009, Phoenix Fire responded to 17 calls for fires on July 4. On July 4 last year, there were more than 10 times that number — 176.

The fire department plans to expand a firework safety education campaign ahead of the Fourth of July. However, Councilmember Jim Waring said he doesn’t have high hopes.
