Firework laws stand ahead of new year celebrations

This New Year’s Eve, state and local authorities are reminding the public of fireworks regulations designed to prevent injuries and property damage during the holiday season.

In 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that an estimated 14,700 people were hospitalized by fireworks in 2024, an increase of about 52% compared to 2023.

Under Arizona's Revised Statutes, fireworks can be discharged in Maricopa County between Dec.  26 and Jan.  4. However, certain types of fireworks, such as aerial fireworks that rise into the air and explode, are prohibited for consumer use throughout the county and can only be used in approved public displays.

Fireworks may not be discharged between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m., with an exception for New Year’s Eve, when they can be used until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.

In Goodyear the regulations align with those set by the state, but with an additional note: individuals responsible for causing an emergency response due to improper firework use may be required to cover the costs of fire department or emergency services.
