Firefighters rescue horse from East Valley canal

A horse that fell into a canal and was struggling to keep its head above water was saved over the weekend by Mesa firefighters.

The Mesa Fire and Medical Depatment received a call about 6:30 p.m. on Easter Sunday about a horse that fell into a canal while trying to cross a metal grate bridge. The rider was not injured, authorities said.

The horse attempted to get out of the canal several times, but the bank was too steep, according to Mesa Fire and Medical officials, and the horse headed farther down the canal.
