Nearly 49% of all fires in a home involve cooking equipment, and cooking is the leading cause of home fire-related injuries.

Fire Prevention Week, which is observed October 8 through 14, aims to raise awareness globally for the importance of fire prevention, and this year’s focus is on cooking safety.

The Surprise Fire-Medical Department will hold a family-friendly Fire Prevention Week event from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 14 to educate and help Surprise residents be prepared for a fire emergency. This event is free and will be held throughout the Surprise Regional Library at 16089 N. Bullard Ave.
Families can learn about home fire hazards and receive fire safety information on topics including kitchen fires, fire extinguishers and how to create a family escape plan. Children can enjoy educational crafts and activities, plus a fire truck will be at the event for participants to see and explore.
This year marks the 101st anniversary of Fire Prevention Week. Started by the National Fire Protection Association in 1922. To learn about Fire Prevention Week, visit the NFPA website at nfpa.org.
