Fire chief missing on Arizona Trail hike found alive
PAYSON — An east-central Arizona fire chief was found alive Wednesday after going missing hiking on the Arizona Trail, according to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office did not say what condition the fire chief, 73-year-old Gary Morris, was in upon his rescue. He was picked up by an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter and transported to the Payson airport.
The search for Mr. Morris, who himself is a member of a search and rescue unit, began Tuesday after he was reported overdue from hiking the Arizona Trail in the Mazatzal Wilderness southwest of Payson.

Mr. Morris is fire chief for the Pine-Strawberry Fire District and a member of Tonto Rim Search and Rescue.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Morris was reported missing after he was overdue in calling for a ride after the scheduled completion of a solo hike.
