Filing extension deadline looms for Arizona taxpayers
Posted
INDEPENDENT NEWSMEDIA
Individual income taxpayers who received a 2021 calendar year tax-filing extension - and have yet to file – are running out of time.
The Arizona Department of Revenue has issued a reminder the filing deadline is Monday, Oct. 17, to submit individual tax returns.
A filing extension provides additional time to file from the due date - five months to file individual returns and seven months for corporate returns.
Paper income returns are considered timely based on the postmark date, and electronic returns and payments may need to be submitted a couple of days early to be considered timely, according to the state.
Those filing a paper individual return can expect a refund in eight to 10 weeks, officials said.
Filing tips from the Department of Revenue
• Double-check tax returns to ensure no information is missing.
• Individual, corporate and partnership e-filing is available and reduces the time to process and amount of paper needed to submit complex and lengthy returns.
• If filing an individual income tax return by paper, check box 82F.
• Include the entire Social Security number or employer identification number.
• Make individual income tax payments on AZTaxes.gov. It does not require registration.
• For businesses, filing electronically is a requirement.
Individual income tax filers needing additional aid may qualify for free tax preparation assistance:
• Arizona Free File Alliance - Offers a free file program to Arizona taxpayers who meet specific criteria. Approximately 88,000 taxpayers used Free File software last year, saving fees, costly errors and receiving their refunds quicker. Individuals must go through azdor.gov to ensure no fees are charged.
• AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program - Delivers free support to individuals 50 and older who cannot afford a tax preparation service to file federal and Arizona returns.
• Volunteer Income Tax Assistance - Provides free tax help to people who generally make $58,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance preparing their tax returns. Taxpayers can acquire free preparation through VITA.
