Few new details on Surprise’s ICE update page

DHS is still giving city little answers on planned facility

The city of Surprise’s new webpage devoted to information about the planned ICE detention center at Sweetwater Avenue and Dysart Road gives a few details about the council’s attempts to get information in recent weeks — but many questions remain unanswered.

The new page at surpriseaz.gov/DHS lists that Mayor Kevin Sartor and city leadership recently met with officials from the Department of Homeland Security, which is still working on an environmental assessment.

DHS told the city the assessment will be for 1,500 beds. DHS had previously said about 500 people would be housed in the facility at any given time.
