OPINION — It is deeply disappointing to see the federal government abandon the “Good Neighbor” policies that traditionally define federal-local relations.
Historically, even when federal agencies held the legal right to bypass local zoning, they worked with cities like Surprise to ensure projects didn't overwhelm local infrastructure. With the recent $70 million purchase of the warehouse on Sweetwater Avenue, that cooperation has been replaced by secrecy.
This isn’t just a political issue; it is a practical one. A Class A warehouse is plumbed for a few dozen employees. Retrofitting that shell to house 1,500 residents creates a massive, unplanned-for load on our city’s water and sewer lines.
