Father killed in police shooting incident was retired deputy sheriff

Ruben Garcia worked for Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for more than 30 years

The Surprise man whose son killed him Saturday evening before police shot and killed the son was a retired Maricopa County deputy sheriff.

Ruben Garcia, who served more than 30 years with the sheriff’s office, was killed when gunshots were fired while he and his son were in an argument inside a home near Reems Road and Acoma Drive.

Officers shot and killed the son after entering the home. Per West Valley Investigative Response Team protocols, the Glendale Police Department will lead the internal investigation.
