Police officers responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. July 28 after receiving a report about an infant not breathing at an apartment complex at 1033 South Longmore.
They found an infant in “respiratory distress,” according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
Mesa Fire and Medical personnel took the baby to a nearby hospital, where, on the morning of July 29, the infant died.
“Medical staff noted visible bruising and internal injuries to the baby,” the release stated.
“Through the course of the investigation, detectives determined that the injuries were inflicted by Barney during an incident in which he was reportedly unable to calm the crying infant.”
