As Chris Udall watches some of Arizona’s precious water flow through an irrigation canal on a cool autumn morning, he might have a lot of future uncertainty on his mind.
Much of that uncertainty affects farmers, ranchers and others who have relied on the Valley water supply — whatever its source — for generations.
Udall comes from a long family line of farmers and ranchers who all likely haggled over water supplies and water rights at some point, as have many of the Udalls who were attorneys, judges or elected officials. Life in a prominent Arizona family inherently leads to both lobbying and engineering, historically.
