Metrocenter Mall

Farewell Metrocenter: Phoenix party remembers community icon

Decades of memories were remembered and celebrated during a May 21 community event bidding a final farewell to Metrocenter Mall in Phoenix.

Metrocenter Mall was once the epicenter of all things Arizona, giving local residents a place to shop, hang out and make memories. Metrocenter was the first mall in the country to have five department store anchors, the first Arizona indoor ice skating rink and the largest mall west of the Mississippi River at its opening. It opened in 1973.

Now, the defunct property will be demolished to make way for an $850 million development and revitalization project. Developers have plans to turn the 64.2 acre site into a 150,000 square feet of walkable retail space with 2,600 multifamily units.
