Running a family-owned business is a labor of love, regardless of industry.
When we opened Sfizio Modern Italian Kitchen in 2021 across from Desert Ridge in Phoenix, our vision was to create a place where guests could feel the same joy we experience when cooking and eating together as a family. Food, for us, is not just sustenance; it’s an expression of love, a way to pass down traditions and a means to create lasting memories.
Working together as father and son has been one of the most rewarding aspects of our venture. We’ve learned invaluable lessons about balance, trust and respect — essentials for any successful family business.
Shared vision, unique strengths
The beauty of working with family lies in the combination of perspectives. As the chef, I, Rocco, focus on the culinary experience. Every dish that leaves the kitchen is crafted with a dedication to honoring Italian traditions.
Marco handles operations, marketing and guest relations. His fresh perspective ensures not only a great place to eat but also a warm and welcoming environment for guests.
Our shared vision and goals keep us aligned while our unique strengths complement each other. Marco’s innovative ideas push us forward, while I ensure that our culinary foundation stays rooted in tradition.
The importance of communication
Working with family comes with challenges. Disagreements are inevitable when both parties are equally passionate about the business. Clear communication is the key to navigating these moments.
Setting boundaries also ensures that family relationships aren’t overshadowed by work. For example, family dinners and celebrations should be for catching up and connecting on a personal level — not for business discussions. At work, approach decisions with mutual respect and always listen to one another’s perspectives.
Blend tradition and innovation
One of the joys of working together is finding ways to blend old and new. In our case, this means respecting our family recipes and techniques while incorporating modern ideas that will resonate with guests.
Family should always be your foundation
Everything at Sfizio is rooted in connection. From hosting guests celebrating milestones to working with our team, who we consider family, the idea of togetherness drives us. Working together as father and son has made our mission to create a space where everyone feels at home even more meaningful.
We’re confident that entrepreneurs who adhere to strong family-work values will successfully build businesses that reflect the strength of family and the joy of sharing what you love with others.
