According to the release,
Officers responded to a call about 7:35 p.m. Oct. 12 of a shooting at a home near 39th Avenue and Maryland Avenue. When officers arrived, they found and detained 31-year-old Brandon Alvarez, who called 911 and told operators he shot his 57-year-old stepfather, Jaunarius Moreno, according to a press release.
Officers cleared the home and found Moreno, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, in the backyard. The fire department responded and determined that Moreno died from his injuries on scene, the release stated.
Homicide detectives responded and continued the investigation. Preliminary information, according to the report, suggested Alvarez and Moreno were in a verbal argument in the backyard when the argument escalated.
Alvarez pulled out his firearm and shot Moreno, which resulted in his death. Alvarez was later booked on one count of second-degree murder.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue to process evidence.
