Experts hope to avoid topping record heat deaths in 2023

New legislation denies park owners to prohibit cooling alternatives

More than 110 Arizonans have succumbed to heat-related deaths in 2024, and experts say the elderly are among the most vulnerable.

Also among the most vulnerable are those living in manufactured homes, where 40% of all heat-related deaths occurred. What makes that shocking is that only 3%, or approximately 300,000, of Arizona’s homes are manufactured, said DeAnna Mireau, Arizona Association of Manufactured Home Owners president.

“I think the sheer number of heat deaths in mobile homes compared to normal housing was the most alarming,” said Kelly McGowan, executive director of Wildfire, a local nonprofit addressing poverty in Arizona.
