Expert: Valley air quality improves despite record winds in Arizona

Despite one of the windiest years on record, state officials say they’re grateful warnings of poor air quality have not materialized as predicted in 2022.

Matt Pace, a meteorologist with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality who forecasts weather and air quality conditions, said this has been the Valley’s windiest year in nearly three decades.

“When we look at Phoenix Sky Harbor, the average wind speed for January through April was right around 24 miles per hour,” he said. “That’s the highest we’ve seen going back to 1994. It was a little windier this year.”
