The National Weather Service has extended its excessive heat warning through July 16 for Maricopa and Pinal counties.

And it may stretch beyond that as  heat risk builds to "major and extreme," NWS officials said.

Daytime high temperatures are expected to approach 118 degrees throughout the week.

NWS officials said the excessive heat subjects people to getting sick or dying from the high temperatures.

It advises individuals to limit outdoor activity to early morning and evening hours and to drink water throughout the day while limiting alcohol use and avoiding drinks with caffeine and sugar.

Those who do go outside should limit sun exposure with sunglasses, hats and lightweight clothing. SPF 30+ sunscreen should be used to protect skin from UV rays, officials advise.

In addition, The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued an ozone high pollution advisory for Sunday, July 9.
