Behavioral health care faces growing need

Behavioral health specialist evolvedMD in Scottsdale plans to hire up to 50 new behavioral health professionals in the coming months to support expanded operations and new locations.

The company currently has offices in Arizona, Utah and across the Intermountain West. It was named one of “the Best Places to Work” by the editors of the Business Journal Publications in 2022 and rides a growing wave of momentum having recently raised $14 million in new investor capital to support its rapidly expanding business in Arizona, Utah and Colorado, according to a press release.

EvolvedMD has also signed exclusive behavioral health support agreements with primary care partners at some of the largest health systems in the West, including Banner Health, HonorHealth, Optum, Granger Medical and Ogden Clinic.

“It’s really the perfect time for mental health therapists to join our growing team,” Vice President of Clinical Services Sarah Hanchett said in the release. “As evolvedMD’s first clinical employee in 2017 and now a member of our executive leadership team, I’ve witnessed firsthand our tremendous growth as well as the pressing need for passionate therapists to deliver high-quality care to patients at their preferred primary care practice where they feel most comfortable.”

How evolvedMD works is simple: The company embeds licensed behavioral therapists on site and in person at each of the practices they serve led by the patient’s primary care provider. Their enhanced Psychiatric Collaborative Care Model delivers a comprehensive solution for primary care that provides mental health expertise, psychiatric consultation, ongoing clinical support and case management, insurance support and navigation, business operations support, and process communications, the release stated.

“Our people tell us that evolvedMD has reignited their passion for therapy because of the support we provide to avoid burnout, including industry-leading pay, hybrid scheduling, paid time off, bonuses for self-care and case management teams to alleviate administrative burden,” Hanchett said in the release. “Therapists want to focus on patients, and so does management, so we have built everything accordingly to put our therapists’ passion and well-being front and center.”

Nearly 50 million American adults experienced a mental illness or episode in 2019, almost 20% of the adult population. Yet, more than half of adults in the United States with a known mental illness do not receive treatment. In addition, over 60% of children and young adults with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment, according to the release.

EvolvedMD makes it easy for primary care to deliver behavioral health care and improve clinical outcomes through collaborative care, an evidence-based model for treating depression and anxiety in primary care settings.

Since launching in 2017, evolvedMD has served 25,000 patients and increased access to care for more than 1 million patients. The special bond that is formed between the patient, their PCP and an evolvedMD therapist, working as a team toward one goal, instills confidence in the patient and lets them know that they do not have to suffer alone. There is a team around them, all striving for their well-being.

EvolvedMD saw its best recruitment quarter yet in April–June of 2023 with 23 new therapists joining to support its mission.

“In traditional health care models, a patient’s therapist and primary care physician rarely work together or even know each other. That doesn’t help the patient, and it doesn’t help medical professionals understand the full picture,” co-CEO Erik Osland said in the release. “But as we grew, we envisioned closing that information gap and created a new collaborative care model where we staff primary care facilities with a variety of behavioral health clinicians and specialists, giving them the resources, training and the structure for the best results. Everyone is on site, on the same page, supported and focused on the patient.”

The company seeks licensed mental health therapists in the Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque areas to join their expanding network of locations.
