Phoenix is getting hotter as the years go by, and now one environmental organization hopes to create community leaders in its efforts to mitigate the devastating impacts of urban heat.
While The Nature Conservancy, one of the world’s largest conservation organizations, typically focuses its efforts on protecting ecologically important areas, it now is turning its attention to cites to address their unique challenges. By 2050, two-thirds of the world will live in cities, the organization estimates.
“The reason we need to be looking at cities is because we know that the world is urbanizing at a faster rate than ever before,” said Diana Bermudez, director of special projects for the Arizona chapter of The Nature Conservancy. “How can we really use nature to help address some of the challenges that we have?”
