Emergency physician warns of rising e-bike and e-scooter injuries in East Valley

As e-bikes and e-scooters surge in popularity across the East Valley, emergency rooms are seeing a troubling rise in serious injuries tied to their use, according to a prominent emergency physician.

Evan Leibner, chair of emergency medicine at Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center and Mercy Gilbert Medical Center,  said emergency physicians have treated a growing number of patients hurt while riding electric bikes and scooters, a trend that accelerated during the pandemic as more people turned to the devices for recreation and transportation.

“We see an increasing number of e-bike and e-scooter accidents,” he said, noting that injuries associated with them have climbed steadily over the past five years.
