El Mirage police said one person is dead and another is in custody after a shooting within the city on Sunday.

At about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 12, El Mirage Police Department officers responded to a shots fired call in the 12100 block of West Desert Lane, near Thompson Ranch and Greenway roads.

Michael Phillips (MCSO)

According to a release, dispatch received several calls from surrounding neighbors, including the alleged suspect, 55-year-old Michael Lynn Phillips.

Police said a physical altercation ensued between Mr. Phillips and a 27-year-old male in the backyard of a residence.

During the altercation, Mr. Phillips allegedly produced a handgun and shot the man in the chest. The man was transported to the hospital and died from his injuries. His name is not available.

Police said Mr. Phillips told officers that he fired in self-defense after a neighbor argued with him and put him in a choke hold.

However, a witness said Mr. Phillips fired his gun even though the 27-year-old was backing away and had his hands in the air.

Mr. Phillips was transported to a local hospital for a shoulder injury and was later released from the hospital and taken into custody.

He was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for second degree murder, aggravated assault and assault.

Bond was set at $100,000 for Mr. Phillips at his initial court appearance Monday, Nov. 13.
