Education should prioritize retaining knowledge, not just accessing it with technology

OPINION — Remember when you asked a teacher how to pronounce a word or what it meant, and the answer was, “go look it up?” At the time, it felt like extra work. Looking back, it was one of the most effective learning tools we had.

I still remember many of the words I searched for in a dictionary. Why? Because I had to put in the effort to find them. That process created retention. It made the knowledge stick.

Today, students have access to instant answers through technology. With a quick search, they can find definitions, solutions and even complete assignments. While technology has its place and offers valuable tools, it has also shifted the focus from learning to simply finding answers.
