East Valley town's police outline limits of cooperation with ICE

The Gilbert Police Department enforces local and state laws and does not carry out federal immigration enforcement, the department said in a statement. 

The department issued the public statement to clarify its role in relation to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 

In the statement, police officials said maintaining community trust is essential to public safety and that officers do not stop, question or detain individuals based on immigration status.
