East Valley rec coordinator brings Kazakhstan lessons home through inclusive soccer camp

An email buried in Taryn Cantrell’s spam folder ultimately took her halfway around the world — and could help launch a new chapter for adaptive sports in Gilbert.

Cantrell, Gilbert’s adaptive recreation coordinator, spent nearly two weeks in Kazakhstan in March as part of a U.S. Department of State sports diplomacy exchange focused on adaptive and inclusive sports.

What she saw there inspired Gilbert’s Kickoff for Inclusion, an inclusive soccer camp scheduled for Sept. 12 at Cactus Yards. About 40 participants of varying ages and abilities had signed up as of Sept. 9, with athletes with and without disabilities playing alongside one another.
