East Valley fire crews battle Public Storage blaze in Mesa

Fire crews from several cities were fighting a blaze Saturday morning at a Public Storage facility near 8th Avenue and Country Club Drive in Mesa.

Mesa officials said they expect to be battling the fire for hours. There were no reports of injuries, officials said.

Mesa police shut down Country Club Drive from 6th to 10th avenues. Eighth avenue eastbound and westbound also was closed, eliminating access to Country Club Drive from either direction, police said.

As of late Saturday morning more than 80 firefighters and 20 units from Mesa, Gilbert and Tempe were on the scene.

“Upon our arrival we made entry into the building attempting a stop,” a release from Mesa Fire and Medical stated.

“Due to the large amount of fire and poor access due to all the locked units and potential collapse the decision was made to go defensive.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.
