Dysart Schools peek at bonds, overrides

Board wants to hear from Surprise, El Mirage community

Bonds and overrides must be approved by voters, and Dysart Unified School District officials are creating a path to get to the wants of Surprise and El Mirage residents in order to cover the needs of the district.

The purpose of a bond committee will be to come up with bond items such as new schools, safety improvements, school buses, building improvements and equipment and other projects, which must be a funded project with a useful life longer than five years.

Bonds are paid a set period of time and authorized by voters and funded through property taxes. Overrides are approved for a term of seven years and according to Marydel Speidell, assistant superintendent for business services, most districts will ask voters for a renewal in year four or five of an override to maintain a consistent level of funding.
