A Texas man is dead and the driver of a dump truck has been arrested following a Thursday morning collision that closed Loop 202 in Tempe for most of the rush hour, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 3 a.m. April 27 near McClintock Drive where an SUV hit a dump truck that was carrying asphalt to a job site, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The left three lanes were closed for paving, and “the collision occurred when the driver of the dump truck pulled out of the closed-off construction area into an active travel lane.

“It was traveling at approximately 15 mph when a sport utility vehicle struck it in a rear-end collision,” DPS officials said in a release.

The 34-year-old Texas man driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, according to DPS, and the driver of the dump truck was not injured.

The dump truck driver was arrested and impairment “has not been ruled out,” officials said, adding an investigation continues.
