Phoenix Police Department detectives have arrested a man on DUI charges in a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday in South Phoenix.
The crash happened about 5:40 p.m. July 13 near 35th and Southern avenues. Officers found Henry Mandley, 44, was ejected from a vehicle and suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died Sunday morning.
The vehicle Mandley was in was driven by a woman and had two boys as passengers. They were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The man driving an SUV “responsible for the collision left the scene on foot with an adult male passenger. Both were shortly detained by responding officers nearby,” a Phoenix Police Department release stated.
Officers identified Fernando Rodriguez-Sanchez, 22, as the driver and noticed signs of impairment, according to the release.
Detectives said they learned Rodriguez-Sanchez was driving east on Southern Avenue and began to pass stopped traffic by driving in the bike lane. He then was seen driving through the red light at 35th and Southern avenues when he hit the victims’ vehicle, which was headed south on 35th Avenue.
Rodriguez-Sanchez was processed for DUI and booked into jail for aggravated assault, endangerment, failure to stay at a fatal collision scene and felony DUI charges, police said.
