Duffy: Vote No on Prop. 301

Posted

Arizona voters should reject Proposition 131 because it keeps us from voting for the best candidates for each office, allows a scenario in which our governor would be someone who has never been on the ballot, and doesn’t detail the lieutenant governor's duties.

Voters should choose the best contenders for each office. Some vote for the governor from one party and Secretary of State from the opposite one. This option should continue.

Our governor should hold the office by election as is now required. This proposition would allow the appointment of a lieutenant governor when the office is vacant, subject only to legislative approval. The people deserve executive officials we’ve elected rather than those we haven't scrutinized. Our current way of electing executive officers and requiring who ascends to the governor's office to hold office by election has served us well.  A change isn't needed.

Proposition 131 doesn’t detail the lieutenant governor's duties, so we don't know what this officeholder will do. Our six executive officials effectively conduct the state's business. A seventh isn't needed.

Let's vote NO on the unnecessary and undemocratic Proposition 131!
