‘Dry Surf: Local Skateboarding History’ opens May 10 at Tempe History Museum

Hard to imagine that the pastime we laughed about during my days as a hanger-on in California’s surfing-crazed 1950s and ‘60s would not only evolve into a sport but an Olympic sport, at that.

Followed by, no surprise, the logical spin-off — skateboarding.

It was an ingenious response, born I suppose to fill the void left when waves were flat and the likelihood of “hanging 10” had to be put off for a better day.
