Drones on tap for Phoenix

Fire, police, parks to use aerial devices

Three city of Phoenix departments detailed what they plan to use drones as the city begins to use them for the first time.

The Phoenix Fire Department, which detailed its plans earlier this year, said it will use drones to locate hikers in need of medical assistance, for quick information gathering in hazardous material spills, to monitor wildfires from above and to monitor structure fires with infrared cameras.

The Phoenix Police Department plans to use drones for emergency situations like barricaded suspects, hostage situations or active shooters; to quickly collect evidence in investigations, particularly traffic collisions, and to monitor crowds at large events.
