Dr. Robert, a resident of Fountain Hills, AZ, departed peacefully on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the age of 89. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bob’s legacy is one of intellect, adventure, and humanitarianism. Born on November 12, 1934, in Rochester, NY, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marianne (Mimi) Salinger, brother William (Bill) Long, and parents Robert Long, Sr. and Mary (Franchot) Long. Bob is survived by his daughters, Margaret (Megan) Smith (Tom) of Rio Rancho, NMand Nancy Crim (Maurice) of Marietta, GA; son, Jeffrey Long (Leslie Flynn) of Iowa City, IA; step-daughter, Tamara (Tammy) Manero of Scottsdale, AZ; eight grandchildren: Jaime Smith, Kyle Smith, Ashley Andry, Mackenzie Crim, Grayson Crim, Mike Gehlsen, Brandon Manero and Sabrina Manero; and two great-grandchildren, Kylar and Alaina Boston. A distinguished scientist, Bob earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics from Dartmouth College and Yale University. His scientific career spanned service with the U.S. government at Sandia National Laboratory (Albuquerque, NM), Hughes Aircraft (Culver City, CA), and Science Applications International Corporation (Albuquerque, MN). Before settling in Fountain Hills in 2014, Bob and Mimi resided in Los Angeles, CA, and Corrales, NM. Their shared passion for exploration led them on captivating journeys to the Amazon, the Caribbean, Ireland, Alaska, Tahiti, Egypt, and Europe. Bob found particular joy in hiking, uncovering the beauty and diversity of local flora and fauna. A memorial service honoring Bob’s life will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2023 at Messinger Mortuary in Fountain Hills at 10:30 A.M. Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the non-profit Rays Awareness (www.raysawareness.org) in support of skin cancer prevention. Bob Long’s legacy will be remembered through the lives he touched, and the knowledge he shared. May he rest in eternal peace.
