DPS troopers rescue baby burro near Lake Pleasant

A baby burro is doing well today since being found earlier this month after his mother was killed on State Route 74 near Lake Pleasant.
Sgt. Roger Hansen of the Arizona Department of Public Safety was among the state troopers and transportation department workers who responded to the scene on Sept. 5 when a female burro and her day-old foal were on the highway.
The foal’s mother was struck by a car and killed; the baby suffered minor injuries and stayed nearby, according to a release from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Hansen contacted One Step Wild Burros and Mustang Rescue in New River which agreed to take the foal if the sergeant could bring him to the rescue, DPS officials said.
Hansen put the burro in the back of his patrol vehicle and off they went.
Stacie Thomas at the rescue matched the foal with a nursing burro, and “the little guy quickly settled in and adjusted to his adoptive mom,” the release stated.
He has been eating, running and playing.
Thomas’ grandson named the burro - Roger - in honor of Sgt. Hansen.
DPS also reported one of its troopers will adopt Roger when he’s old enough.
